Abstract
This research aimed to discover the effect of using Retelling Story towards students’ speaking ability in the eleventh grade of Senior High School. It was done MAN 1 Pasaman. The researcher found some problems; first the teacher used the teacher centered method in teaching, students were not actively involved in classroom communication. This limited their speaking practice, reduced their confidence, and hindered the development of essential speaking skills such as fluency and pronunciation. Then, there was no meaningful interaction, especially in using English for communication. Last, the students had difficulty in expressing their ideas because of limited vocabulary. This research used experimental research with quasi experimental design by using pre-test and post-test experimental and control group design. The population of this research were two classes at eleventh grade students in MAN 1 Pasaman, consist of 61 students. To determine the sample the researcher used random sampling. The samples were XI IAI (F.2) as the experiment class and XI IPA (F.3) as the control class. The data were gotten from the result of students’ speaking ability in the pre-test and post-test through monologue task. The result of the research indicated the improvement score in experimental class. The mean score of pre-test was 41.20, where the mean score of students’ post-test was 79.50. It means that Retelling Story Technique gave contribution on students’ reading comprehension. In addition, from the calculation of the data it showed that the value of sig. (2tailed) was 0.00 lower than 0.05 in independent sample t-test and 0.000 lower than 0.05 in paired sample test. in other words, the alternative hypothesis was accepted, which was there was significant effect of using Retelling Story technique on students’ speaking ability at the eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Pasaman and there was the difference between the students’ speaking ability by Retelling Story to the students taught by using conventional method. For the third hypotheses showed that the score of experimental class is higher than the control class with score (79.50>71.97). It can be concluded that, using Retelling Story gave significant effect for students in improve their speaking ability.
