Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the correlation between students' interest and their speaking skill among English Club members at Pondok Pesantren Sumatera Thawalib Parabek Bukittinggi. Recognizing that interest can increase engagement in speaking, and acknowledging that speaking was a crucial skill in language learning. Furthermore, English Club acted as the place for students to facilitate their interest and speaking. This research explored whether a relationship between students' interest and their ability in speaking English. This research was due to some problems such as there were students who show interest in English, but could not speak in English well and there were students who show little interest in English, but can speak well by using English. This research used a correlational design within a quantitative approach to examine the relationship between students' interest and speaking skill among English Club members at Pondok Pesantren Sumatera Thawalib Parabek Bukittinggi. This research used total sampling to gather the data. Data were collected by questionnaires and speaking tests, that had been tested the validity and reliability, which furthermore was analyzed using Pearson product moment correlation since the data were normal, homogenous, and linear. The questionnaire used a Likert scale, while oral test scoring assessed pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The findings showed that there was low correlation between students' participation interest in English clubs and their speaking skills. The findings showed that students who were more interested in participating in English clubs tended to have better speaking abilities, but the relationship was relatively weak. While the correlation was positive, it fell within the "low correlation" category, indicated that interest alone may not be a strong predictor of speaking proficiency. There was other factor such as frequency of practicing in English. In conclusion, the study revealed the low correlation of interest in English clubs and their speaking skills.
