Abstract
This research aims to describe the correlation between students’ anxiety and speaking fluency at EIE class of English Education Department of UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi. Fluency in speaking is closely related to psychological factors, namely how students cope with anxiety. Many theories state that students' anxiety can affect students' fluency when speaking a foreign language. Therefore, the researcher made observations to find out the real situation. In addition, some students had anxieties when speaking English because anxiety had an effect on performance while some other students had no problems. The method used in this research was quantitative method with the correlational design. The population of this research was the all of the fourth semester students of English Department of UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi at English for Islamic Education Class. There were 53 students selected as the sample by total sampling technique. There were two instruments in collecting the data. The first instrument that were used in this research was questionnaire to measure students’ anxiety in learning English as a foreign language, in this case, Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale(FLCAS) which was developed by Howirtz. The second instrument was to speaking fluency, in this research is oral test was implemented. The data were collected and calculated by using Pearson Product Moment correlation coefficient and t-test with sig. 5%. Based on the research analysis, it shows thatthe result of the Product Moment correlation was negative so the hypothesis was reversed. The value of rxy= -0.277, it is lower than r table value in the significance of 5% (rxy = -0.277 < rt(5%) =- 0.2284). Moreover, based on the calculation of the ttest, it is found that the score of t= -1,684 and it is lower than the score of ttable, which t= -1,684 < ttable(5%),(51) = 2.007). It means that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. Besides, based on determination coefficient analysis, students’ anxiety has 7,6% contribution in speaking fluency skill. Based on the hypothesis testing of Person Product Moment and ttest, it shows that there is negative significant correlation between students’ anxiety and speaking fluency at English For Islamic Education Class of UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi. It was concluded that the students' anxiety factors had a low correlation and there were several other aspects that affected speaking fluency.
