Abstract
This study was motivated by the increasing use of AI by students in completing writing tasks. The use of AI applications such as ChatGPT, Perplexity AI, QuillBot, Grammarly, and Gemini had increased rapidly, while the university did not yet have official guidelines regarding the ethical use of AI. In addition, students showed low awareness in using AI responsibly. These conditions led to various ethical problems, including plagiarism, a lack of honesty in acknowledging AI assistance, excessive dependence on AI, and a decline in critical thinking skills. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze students’ ethical problems in using AI for writing task at UIN Bukittinggi. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The research informants consisted of 10 fifth-semester students who were selected using purposive sampling. The research instruments included interview guidelines developed based on ICAI theory and Alsamhori and Alnaimat’s theory, as well as documentation in the form of students’ AI usage histories and final writing tasks. The data were collected through in-depth interviews and comparisons between AI-generated outputs and the writing tasks submitted by the students. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which involved data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/ verification. The findings showed that students experienced various ethical problems in using AI. The students tended not to disclose their use of AI openly, relied excessively on AI-generated outputs without proper verification, and copied AI results without sufficient personal effort. Full dependence on AI also led to a decline in respect for the independent learning process. In addition, the students did not take full responsibility for AI-assisted writing outcomes and were not willing to admit their use of AI. This study concluded that the absence of guidelines for AI use and low ethical awareness contributed to the emergence of unethical behavior in students’ writing tasks.
