Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the effect of using English podcast toward students’ speaking skill. It had been done at MAN 2 Agam. This research was carried out because the students had some problems in speaking English. It is caused by several factors. Most of them made grammar error in speaking. On the other hand they were afraid to speak English because they did not have enough confidence. Also they had low capability in mastering pronunciation and vocabuary. This research used experimental research. The researcher used a quasi-experimental design by using the pretest-posttest control group design. The population of this research was the tenth grade students of MAN 2 Agam. The sample was IPA 2 as experimental class and taught by English podcast and IPA as control class and taught without English podcast. To determine the sample, the researcher used purposive sampling technique. The data was got through pretest and posttest to experimental and control groups. To analyze the data, the researcher used SPPS 20 to test the normality and the homogenity. And fo the hypothesis testing, the researcher used t-test formula and consulted the result into t- table with level of significance ? = 0,05. From the result and accounting of the pre-test and post-test of the experiment class, the researcher found three result. First there was a significant effect of using English podcast toward students’ speaking ability. It was proven by the value of t-calculated of experimental class in pre test and post test was higher than t-table ( 2,73 > 2,021). Second there was significant difference between the students who were taught by using English podcast and students who were taught without English podcast. It was proven by the value t-calculated in post test from experimental class and control class was greater than t-table (2,064 > 2,021). Third, teaching by using English podcast was better than teaching without English podcast toward students’ speaking skill. It was proven by improvement of the mean score of experimental class was higher than control class in post test (8,21 > 4,17).
