Abstract
Reading is one of the language skills, that should be mastered well by the students because it is essential factor that influences one’s activity in communication. Education and information literacy evolve along with technological developments, changing the way individuals’ access and consume information. The key of variables in this context is "reading attitude". Reading attitudes include readers' perceptions, preferences and behavior towards reading material. This study was conducted to determine significant differences between male and female in terms of cognitive, affective, and conative aspects. However, male students in the 6th semester of Uin Bukttinggi often consider reading to be unimportant and uninteresting which causes a low level of student knowledge and dislike in reading, while female students consider reading to be very fun and important. from these different views, this study aims to find out how reading attitudes differ between male students and female students. This study uses a quantitative descriptive method. the population of this study consists of three classes in semester 6 with a sample selected based on an equal number of males and females from semester 6 students selected by total sampling. data collected using a questionnaire given directly, which contains three important aspects of reading attitude. questionnaire items are analyzed using a Likert scale and the data undergo validity, reliability, normality and homogeneity testing using spss 20. The findings reveal a significant difference in reading attitudes between male and female students. Based on the hypothesis testing, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. This is evident from the mean scores, where females scored 82.23, while males scored 73. This indicates that female students exhibit more positive reading attitudes than their male counterparts, consistent with existing theoretical expectations.
