Abstract
This study originated from observed challenges in the instructional process of writing descriptive texts via the Canva application. Preliminary observations revealed that students encountered difficulties in ideation and exhibited low levels of attentiveness toward the instructor. Additionally, there was a lack of integrated follow-up activities to reinforce the writing process. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the factors that influence the motivation of ninth-grade students at SMPN 6 Bukittinggi in writing descriptive texts through the use of Canva. This study employed a descriptive quantitative approach, utilizing a questionnaire as the primary instrument for data collection. The population comprised all 144 ninth-grade students at SMPN 6 Bukittinggi. A sample of 28 students from class 9.4 was selected through purposive sampling, as this specific class had utilized Canva in their descriptive text lessons. To analyze the data, the Guttman scale analysis technique was applied, as this scale is appropriate for dichotomous responses (e.g., Yes/No) and aims to measure the consistency of respondents’ answers. The analysis included the calculation of the reproducibility coefficient and the scalability coefficient to determine the reliability and validity of the scale used in this study. The findings of the research indicated that students exhibited a high level of motivation in writing descriptive texts using the Canva application. This was particularly evident in the first dimension of motivational factors, which achieved an average score of 94.63%. The majority of students demonstrated strong motivation, as shown by their active engagement with Canva and positive responses to the questionnaire. These results suggest that integrating Canva into writing activities effectively enhances students' motivation and engagement in language learning.
