Abstract
The aims of this research was to determine the effect of watching English movie toward students’ speaking fluency. This research was carried out because students get difficulties to speak English when they want to talk with others. It was caused by several factors there were nervousness, it would be really possible for students to lose their words in their mind, students will forget what the student want to say. Then, the habit in using Indonesian or mothertongue in learning process, this phenomenon defined as pause fillers that usually occurred when students tried to express complex idea in speak English. In addition the teacher used monotonous ways in students speaking practice. This research employed a quasi-experimental design was used by the researcher. The researcher used pre-test and post-test to experimental class and control class. The population of this research was the second grade students of SMAN 1 Padang Gelugur. The sample was XI.IPA 1 as experimental class taught by watching English movie and XI.IPA 2 as control class and taught without watching English movie. To determine the sample, the experimental and control class, the researcher utilized SPSS 20 to examine the data and check for normality and homogeneity. The researcher utilized the t-test formula to test the hypothesis and consulted the results in a t-table with level of significance of 0.05. From the calculation of the research used statistic descriptive and statistic inferential from the pre-test and post-test score in experiment class, it was found that there was a significant effect of watching English movie toward students speaking fluency. It was proven by the value t-calculated of experimental class in pre-test and post-test was higher than t-table (18.319 > 1.995). Then there was a significant difference between students who were taught by watching English movie and those who were taught without them. The value of t-calculated in post-test from the experimental and control classes was greater than t-table (5.58 > 1.995). The last hypothesis was that teaching with watching English movie was higher than teaching without watching English movie in terms of improving students speaking fluency.
