Abstract
The background of this research was several problems. First, teacher had difficulties in selecting teaching materials that suited students’ diverse learning styles, such as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Second, teacher tended to rely solely on the textbook and faced difficulties in providing additional teaching resources to support students’ learning needs. Third, teacher had limited ability to utilize technology effectively in teaching, which restricted opportunities to engage students and diversify learning materials. Therefore, this research was conducted to find out the difficulties faced by English teacher and to identify the strategies they used in choosing teaching material under the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum. The design of this research was qualitative research with a case study approach. The informant was an English teacher from grade VII. To collect the data, this research used observation sheets, which focused on teacher’s difficulties and strategies in choosing teaching materials in the classroom, and interviews, which explored teacher’s difficulties and strategies in choosing teaching materials in the Merdeka Curriculum. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, following the typical stages of qualitative research. The findings showed that English teacher faced several difficulties in choosing teaching materials in choosing teaching materials under the Merdeka Curriculum. Such as, relevance with curriculum and learning objectives, cultural and contextual relevance, availabilty and accessibilty of materials, and time constraints. To overcome these challenges, the teacher applied several strategies. Such as, adapted materials, supplemented materials, used authentic materials, collaborated with colleagues, and integrated technology.
