Abstract
This study examines how students’ emotional intelligence relates to their performance in delivering English presentations at SMAN 1 Mungka. Many students still struggle with public speaking due to anxiety, nervousness, and difficulty managing emotions during English presentations, which often affects their clarity, confidence, and overall performance. Students with better emotional abilities are expected to express ideas more clearly and interact in a more engagement during presentations task. A quantitative correlational design was applied in this research. The sample consisted of 25 students from the XII grades of SMAN 1 Mungka, selected through a total sampling technique. Emotional intelligence data were gathered using a Likert-type questionnaire, whereas students’ public speaking scores were taken from their English performance assessments. Pearson Product Moment analysis using SPSS version 26 was employed to determine the correlation between the variables. The findings reveal that students’ emotional intelligence and public speaking performance are both categorized at a high level. Based on the Pearson Product–Moment correlation analysis, the results indicate a strong and statistically significant positive relationship between emotional intelligence and public speaking performance (r = 0.916, p < 0.05). This correlation coefficient suggests that students with higher levels of emotional intelligence tend to demonstrate better performance in English presentations. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (r² = 0.91) indicates that emotional intelligence accounts for a large proportion of the variance in students’ public speaking performance, highlighting the close association between emotional intelligence and the students’ public speaking performance.
