Abstract

This research was conducted because some problems were faced by students in learning English especially in vocabulary mastery. Some of the problems were: students get found difficulties to memorize new vocabulary, they preferred to use Indonesian language during the teahing and learning process rather than English. In general, the students had difficulties to understanding learning English. The aim of this research to find out the effect of four square strategy toward students’ vocabulary mastery. The type of this research is quasi-experiment using non-equivalent control group design. The population of this research was all of the seventh-grade students of SMPN 2 Koto Baru in which the total number of the students were 195 students and divided into 6 classes. Because the population was higher than 100, the researcher took 2 classes: VII D as experimental class consisted of 33 students and VII E as control class consisted of 33 students. The instrument used in this research is the vocabulay test in the form of multiple- choice questions. To analyze the data. The researcher used paired sample t-Test and independent sample t-Test to check the research hypothesis. The results of this research by using a paired sample t-test, showed that tobtained was 11,389 was higher than ttable was 1.692 with a significant level 0.05. The null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted, indicating a significant effect of using four square strategy on students vocabulary mastery of the first hypothesis. For the second and third hypotheses, independent sample t-test was used to compare the two class. With a significant 0.05. the result of the hypothesis test showed the H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted, that the means tobtained 2,363 is higher than 1.295 with a significant 0.05. indicating that the vocabulary mastery of students who use the four square strategy was better than that students who did not use. It could be concluded four square strategy had effect on students’ vocabulary mastery.
