Abstract

Listening is an important skill in English language learning, but many students experienced difficulties in understanding spoken texts due to limited vocabulary, lack of exposure to diverse accents, and the use of teaching materials that did not reflect real language. This study aimed to examine the effect of using authentic materials, such as podcasts and videos selected based on students' ability standards, on their listening skills. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a population of grade X students of SMAN 1 Kamang Magek. The sample was selected through cluster random sampling and was divided into two groups, an experimental class that was taught using authentic materials and a control class that did not use them. The research instrument was a multiple-choice test with 25 questions. A pre-test and post-test were given to both classes to measure students' listening comprehension before and after treatment. Data analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and the Mann-Whitney U Test to determine the effectiveness of the treatment. The results showed that authentic materials significantly improved students' listening skills. First, the value of (Asymp Sig. 0.00 < 0.05) indicates that the alternative hypothesis is accepted. Second, there is a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group as evidenced by (Asymp Sig. 0.03 < 0.05). Third, the use of authentic materials is more effective in improving listening skills as seen by the higher average score increase in the experimental class (18.81 > 15.55). This shows that authentic materials are more effective in improving students' listening comprehension. The advantages of using authentic materials include increased ability to understand various accents, exposure to language use in real contexts, and increased student motivation and engagement in learning. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers integrate authentic materials into listening instruction to improve student comprehension and engagement.
