Abstract
This research was motivated by several problems of students at the eighth grade in SMPN 5 Pariaman related to students’ vocabulary mastery. The problems of this research were teacher did not focus on increasing students’ vocabulary in the classroom and students were not active during vocabulary learning and had limited vocabularies. This research aimed to know whether there was significant effect of using word mapping strategy on students’ vocabulary mastery, whether there was any significant difference in teaching by using word mapping strategy and not using word mapping strategy on students’ vocabulary mastery, whether teaching by word mapping strategy better that not using word mapping strategy. Researcher used a quasi experimental research with two group pretest and posttest design. The population of this research was the eighth grade students in SMPN 5 Pariaman consist of three classes with the total was 95 students. The sample was in class VIII.1 with the total 32 students and VIII.3 with the total 32 students which were taken by using cluster sampling. The data was analyzed by using liliefors test to test the normality and homogeneity data. Whereas, to test the hypothesis, researcher used t test, then researcher consulted the result with the degree table (ɑ) = 0.05. The result of this research showed that the vocabulary mastery of students at the eighth grade in SMP 5 Pariaman had poor score in pretest which mean score 60,47 for experiment class and 50,78 for control class. The vocabulary scores increased after treatment which mean score 77,97 for experiment class and 64,38 for control class. The result of t-obatned from hypothesis one = 7,536 > t-table 2,039 with degree freedom (df) = 31 with 0,05/2=0,025/ meanwhile the sig (2-tailed) was 0,000 < 0,05. The result of t-obtained from hypothesis two = 3,112 > t-table 1,669 with degree freedom (df) = 62 with 0,05. Meanwhile, the sig (2-tailed) was 0,003 < 0,05. It was proven that using word mapping strategy helped to improve students’ vocabulary mastery.
