Abstract
Vocabulary played an important role in learning English, especially for vocational high school students who needed language skills for academic and professional purposes. The students rely on Google Translate and the time-consuming process when students used a paper dictionary in learning English in the classroom, especially in vocabulary, made it essential to conduct a study comparing both tools. The aim of this research was to find out whether there was a significant difference of between students who used Google Translate and those who used a paper dictionary on vocabulary at SMK N 2 Bukittinggi. This study utilized a quantitative approach with a comparative research design. The population consisted of all tenth-grade students at SMK N 2 Bukittinggi. Simple random sampling was used to selected 90 students that divided into two groups that was Google Translate group and paper dictionary group. The sample was 45 students for each group. Data were collected through a multiple-choice vocabulary test. Data were analyzed using independent sample t-test with SPSS 20 to examine differences between the two groups. The results showed that the mean score of vocabulary test on paper dictionary group was 60,40, while the Google Translate group had a mean score of 59,73. The result of the independent sample t-test indicated a t-value of 0,221 and a significance level or Sig. 2-tailed of 0.826. Since the Sig.-value was greater than 0.05, the null hypothesis H₀ was accepted and Ha was rejected, indicating that there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. this indicated that students can used both tools for vocabulary learning with supported by appropriate guidance and strategies from the teacher.
