Abstract

Teaching skills are basic teaching abilities that student-teachers learned before conducting a real teaching activities in the field teaching practicum. Unfortunately, some of the student-teachers of the English Language Education Study Program at UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi still experience several obstacles in applying several teaching skills. This research was retrieved from the problems experienced by student-teachers during their field teaching practicum (PPL). The problem was difficulties in managing the conducive class and students’ behavior, lack of teaching strategy in the classroom, and lack of using an appropriate learning media based on the learning material. This research was conducted to analyze how the teaching skills were implemented by student-teachers during their field teaching practicum. This research was a qualitative research design using purposive sampling. The criteria of the participants were: The student-teachers of English department who willing to be participants, and student-teachers who have attended field teaching practicum program of 2024. The data and source of the data in this research were teaching skills implemented by 10 student-teachers teaching English during field teaching practicum program (PPL) 2024 in form of video document. The instrument used in this research were document checklist analysis related to 10 basic teaching skills based on the theory of Rohmah (2021) elaborated with Sihotang and Simorangkir (2020) by using document checklist, there were total of 45 statement items related to teaching activities. The results of this research reveal the teaching skills that were implemented and not implemented or not sufficiently covered by student-teachers during teaching in the classroom. The results of this research show the student-teachers had implemented the teaching skills well, but there were still several student-teachers who were not implemented several skills properly. First of all, at opening the class, lot of student-teachers did not convey the learning objectives. Then in the classroom management, student-teachers lack of giving educational reprimands, the student-teachers seems facing difficulties in managing the conducive classroom, the class sound noisy and several students look ignored their teacher. Next, half of student-teachers were not provided group discussions, however they replaced the activities by class discussions and individual assignment. In the use of media or tools, student-teachers lack of vary their learning media, most student-teachers tend to utilized visual learning media PowerPoint. The last, student-teachers tend to use Indonesia rather than English during the classroom, such as in explaining, questioning, and giving reinforcement to the students.
