Abstract

This research aimed to determine whether the use of crossword puzzles significantly impacts students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade of SMPN 2 Dua Koto. This research was conducted because same problems were faced by students in vocabulary mastery. The problems were related to many students having limited vocabulary and some students had difficulty memorizing new vocabulary that they had learned. This research used a pre-experimental design, with one group pretest and posttest design. The population was 8th-grade students of SMPN 2 Dua Koto with a sample consisting of 24 students. This study used a total sampling technique in sampling because the population was only one class. Data was collected using an instrument in the form of a vocabulary test with 20 multiple-choice questions. The data were analyzed by a paired sample t-test to measure the significance of the effect of using crossword puzzle towards students’ vocabulary mastery. In this research, the results of hypothesis testing showed that Sig. (P-value) or Sig.(2-tailed) is 0.000 less than α = 0.05. This meant that Sig. (P-value) < 0.05, so it could be concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, or it could be said the crossword puzzle had significant effect on improving students’ vocabulary mastery at 8th SMPN 2 Dua Koto. This was also proven by the average post-test score (64.79) being higher than the pre-test average score (30.42). Furthermore, this research shows that after using crossword puzzles students' vocabulary mastery was better than before using crossword puzzle. It could be concluded that this strategy was one of the good strategies for teaching vocabulary.
