Abstract

Nowadays, speaking ability is very important for students to master. At the vocational school level, English has become recognized as a key support for future careers. However, many vocational students still have difficulty using English to convey ideas or communicate effectively. This problem often stems from factors such as anxiety, limited practice opportunities, and classroom activities that are not well connected to real-life contexts. The Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach addresses these obstacles by embedding language instruction in authentic and relevant contexts. CTL promotes active engagement through four indicators: making meaningful connections, self-regulated learning, critical and creative thinking, and collaboration. This study aims to determine how effective the CTL approach is in improving English speaking skills. This study used a quantitative descriptive method. The participants were 96 tenth-grade students. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire consisting of 20 closed-ended statements designed to measure the effectiveness of CTL. The questionnaire results were analysed using percentage techniques to determine the level of effectiveness. The results indicate that the Contextual Teaching and Learning approach is effective for improving students' speaking skills. This conclusion is based on a data interpretation score of 75%, which falls within the effective range of 72%–89%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the CTL approach is effective in improving students' speaking skills.
