Abstract

Reading is one of the important English skills for students to learn because reading can provide some information and knowledge.Students get bored when studying in the classroom and it is difficult for students to work with it because students do not understand how to comprehend a reading material. Thus, students need some ways or strategy which could help students’ reading comprehension. Context clues strategy can help the students to understand reading text. The objective of this research to find out the effect of using context clues strategy on students’ reading comprehension. It has been done at SMK Harapan Bangsa Panti because most of students still encounter problems in mastering English especially in reading comprehension. Most of student lack of vocabulary and students had low motivation in reading English text, students assumed that English is difficult thing. This research used experimental research. The researcher used a quasi- experimental design by using the pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was first grade students of SMK Harapan Bangsa Panti. The sample was X.OTKP which was treated as experimental class taught by using context clues strategy and X.BDP was treated by conventional. To determine the sample, the researcher used purposive sampling technique. To analyze the data of experimental class and control class, the researcher used the normality by using Liliefors test and the homogeneity test by using F-test result and to test the hypothesis the researcher used t-test formula and consulted the result into ttable with the level of significant (?) =0.05. The findings show that three hypothesis (Ha) were accepted. The first, the result of the pre-test and the post-test scores of experimental class was found that the tobtained (10.31) more than ttable (1.960). So, Ha was accepted that there was a significant effect of using context clues strategy on students’ reading comprehension. The second, the result of the post-test scores of experimental and control class were found that the tobtained (4.21) more than the ttable (1.960). Thus, Ha was accepted that there was a significant difference between the students who taught by using context clues strategy and using conventional. The last, the result of the post-test of experimental class and control class were found that tobtained (4.21) more than ttable (1.960). It was also found that the students’ reading comprehension by using context clues strategy was better than conventional. It means that by using context clues strategy in teaching English gives significant effect on students’ reading comprehension.
