Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problem found on the third grade textbook of Junior High School published by Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. There was an indication that the textbook did not fulfill the cultural content criterion. Meanwhile, fulfilling cultural content was unquestionably salient thing as it was one of criteria of effective textbook that would help to accomplish the goal of national education. This research was designed as document analysis. The object of this research was textbook of grade three that published by Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. In order to analyse the textbook systematically and comprehensively, this research used Byram’s cultural content theory that considered comprehensive and sufficient as the root theory that also used by many scholars when discuss about culture which consist of nine criterion. The result of the study showed that not all of cultural content criterion presented well on the textbook. Form nine criterion, there were only two criterion that presented well, five criterion that presented with no detail, and two criterion that did not presented at all on the textbook. This finding indicated that there is a demand to revise English textbook of nine grade on Junior High School in order to improve the contribution of textbook towards Indonesian education itself.
