Abstract

This study aims to analyze and explain the types of lexical errors made by fourth-semester students of the English Education Study Program at UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi when translating texts from English into Indonesian. The lexical errors were identified based on James' taxonomy (2013), encompassing formal and semantic errors. Data were collected through students’ translation documents and analyzed using a case study approach to uncover error patterns. This research used a qualitative case study design, focusing on 16 students selected through homogeneous sampling. The participants were chosen based on similar proficiency levels and educational backgrounds in translation. Data were collected from students’ translation test documents and supplemented with interviews. Document analysis served as the primary instrument, enabling an in-depth exploration of lexical errors. Ellis’ error analysis procedure (1997) guided the systematic identification, categorization, and interpretation of the errors, ensuring comprehensive and reliable findings. The results showed that formal errors, such as misselection, misformation, and distortion, dominated the students’ translations. Meanwhile, semantic errors, involving confusion of sense relations and collocational errors, were also found in significant numbers. These findings highlight the challenges students face in mastering accurate and contextual translation skills.
