Abstract

Reading comprehension plays a crucial role in English learning particularly in understanding narrative text. Based on the observation and interview conducted at MTsN 7 Agam, the researcher found that most students were struggling to comprehend English text, especially in finding main idea, implicit information and finding moral message. Addition, the teacher was still used conventional methods, where students read the text, translate words and answer question from the text book, which made the learning less interactive. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the effect of using Escape Room toward students’ reading comprehension of narrative text at the eight-grade of MTsN 7 Agam. This research applied a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental research design. The population was 222 students of eight grade, and the sample was determined through cluster sampling technique, which resulted in class VIII.2 as the control class and class VIII.3 as the experiment class. To collect the data, the researcher used a multiple-choice reading comprehension test, administered in the form of pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test to examine the difference between the pre-test and post-test results whitin in each class, and Mann-Whitney U Test to examine the difference between the experimental and control classes. Based on the statistical analysis the result showed Ha wals alccelpteld, alnd H0 rejected. ELscalpel Room hald al significalntl elffelct in improving studelnts' relalding comprelhelnsion, this showed by thel Wilcoxon Signeld Ralnk Telst which produceld al Sig.l = 0.000. There was a significant difference between the reading comprehension of students in the experimental class and the control class after the treatment, this showed by thel Malnn-Whitnely U Telst, with Sig. = 0.006, whelrel thel elxpelrimelntall clalss obtalineld al highelr melaln ralnk of 38.73 compalreld to 26.27 in thel control clalss. In addition, telalching relalding using ELscalpel Room wals belttelr thaln using convelntionall melthod in improving studelnts’ relalding comprelhelnsion. This showed thel elxpelrimelntall clalss got higher improvelmelnt alnd al highelr melaln ralnk thaln thel control clalss. Based on the findings, the used of Escape Room have a significantly effect on students’ reading comprehension at the eight-grade of MTsN 7 Agam.
