Abstract

Theoretically, interest and motivation are two aspects that contribute to students’ success in learning. This research is aimed at determining a correlation between students' interest and motivation in students' English learning achievement. Empirically, the rationalities of the research are based on the three main rationales. Firstly, students had low participation in the learning process. Secondly, students had low responsibility for the tasks given by the teacher, and Thirdly, the average students’ scores were below the Standard Minimum Completeness (KKM). There are some students who do not have the interest and motivation can even get good grades, and vice versa. Such factors relate closely to the student’s interest and motivation in learning English. The type of research is correlational research using quantitative method. The population of the research was students of class XII SMA N 2 Lubuk Basung, encompassing four classes namely class XII IPA 1, XII IPA 2, XII IPS 1 and XII IPS 2 which amounted to 118 students. The sample of the research was 30 students selected using a random sampling technique. The research instruments were a questionnaire of students’ interest and motivation in learning English. The questionnaire consists of 30 statements from each questionnaire to students, and as documentation were students’ English Midterm test scores. This research found that there was a significant correlation between students’ interest and students’ learning achievement, with a score of sig. 0.001 < 0.05 and the score of the correlation was 0.580 which indicates the strength of the correlation is enough. The correlation between motivation and students’ learning achievement with the score of sig. 0.027 < 0.05 and the score of the correlation was 0.402 which indicates the strength of the correlation is enough, this means that there was a significant correlation between motivation and students’ learning achievement in learning English. Multiple correlations were obtained with the score of sig. 0.002 < 0.05 and the score of the correlation was 0.607 which indicates the strength of the correlation is strong. It was concluded that there was a significant correlation between students’ interest and motivation simultaneously on students’ learning achievement in learning English.
