Abstract

This research aimed to analyze students’ cheating behavior in doing English assessment at the 8th grade of SMPN 1 Tigo Nagari. Cheating has become a widespread issue in educational settings. Cheating is frequently reported as a problem in the classroom. The researcher found several problems such as students’ cheating because they had difficulty understanding the material, the students were asked for answers from their peers, whispering during exams, and even covering their faces with question sheets to look for help and using common cheating strategies such as copying and colaborating to get the answers during the exam. This research used a descriptive quantitative approach, utilized a questionnaire as an instrument. The population in this research were 8th grades of SMPN 1 Tigo Nagari, the total of the population was 185 students. The sample were in the seven classes with total 46 students. In determing the sample, researcher used simple random sampling. The researcher distributed questionnaire randomly to each sample, then colected the data. Afterward, researcher identified the respondents’ answer and analyzed the data through the three steps; preparation, tabulation and application of appropriate data. The research found that overall there was 46.3% of students engaging in cheating. Based on results of the data questionnaire, the factors that contributed on cheating behavior were internal factors 45.5%; poor decision making, low self-efficacy, self-confidence and, lazy attitude. In the other side, external factors 47.1%, were; peer effect, weak moral education, and teacher factors. In conclusion, the study highlights that both internal and external factors significantly contribute to the high prevalence of cheating behavior among eighth-grade students in English assessments.
