Abstract
This research aimed to describe the correlation between students’ motivation and speaking ability of the 8th grade students in SMPIT Cahaya Hati Bukittinggi. This research was conducted because there were some problems; there were some students who had low speaking ability although they had good motivation in learning English. On the contrary, the students who have low motivation in learning English show good speaking performance. The method used in this research is quantitative method with the correlational design. The population of this research was all of the eighth-grade students in SMPIT Cahaya Hati Bukittinggi. There were 42 students in the sample by total sampling technique. There were two instruments for collecting the data. The first instrument that was used in this research was a questionnaire to measure students’ motivation in learning English as a foreign language. The second instrument was the speaking test; in this research, an oral test was implemented. The data was analyzed using Pearson's correlation formula. Based on the research analysis, which showed a significant positive correlation with a value of 0,739. The value of rxy = 0,582, it is higher than r table value in the significance of 5% (rxy = 0,582 ˃ rt = 5%), so the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was acceped. It could be concluded that the higher the students’ motivation, the better their speaking ability.
