Abstract
This research aimed to determine the effect of using the character quotes strategy on students' reading comprehension of narrative texts at 11th-grade students at SMA N 8 Mandau. This research was conducted because some problems were faced by students in reading comprehension. The problems were related to many students having difficulty finding the main idea, the students’ lack of ability to find specific information, make inferences from the information implied of the text, and the teacher used the conventional method. This research used a true-experimental design. The population of this research was 11th grade students in SMAN 8 Mandau in which the total number of the students 395 students and divided into 11 classes. This research used a cluster sampling technique. The selected samples were the XI.1b class as the experimental class consisted of 36 students and XI.2b as the control class consisted of 36 students. The normality and homogeneity tests were used to analyze the data. Meanwhile, the Wilcoxon Sign- Rank test and Mann Whitney U-test were used to analyze the hypothesis test. In this research, the first hypothesis used a Wilcoxon Sign- Rank test, it was found that Sig (2-tailed) is 0,000, less than α = 0.05. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, indicating a significant influence of using character quotes strategy. Next, for the second hypothesis used a Mann Whitney U-test, it was found that Sig (2-tailed) is 0,000, less than α = 0.05. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, indicating a significant difference between students taught using character quotes strategy and those not taught with character quotes strategy. In the third hypothesis, the post-test average of the experimental class was higher than the average of the control class, which means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted that the reading comprehension of students taught using character quotes strategy was better than that of students who were not taught character quotes strategy. So, it can be concluded that this research proves that the use of character quotes strategy can help improve students' comprehension in reading.
