Abstract

Textbooks are one of the sources of teaching materials used by teachers in teaching reading materials. The use of textbooks as a source of reading teaching materials is identical to extensive reading activities. Thus, reading teaching materials in textbooks must be in accordance with the 2013 curriculum which applies to aspects of relevance, consistency, and adequacy. This study aims to determine the suitability of reading teaching materials with the curriculum on these aspects. Qualitative descriptive techniques was used in this study. The research data were collected from two English textbooks for grade 7 Junior High School, Book 1 from the Ministry of Education and Culture and Book 2 from Yudhistira. The sample was taken using purposive sampling which was selected according to the researcher's request and research objectives. As a research instrument, a checklist document was used in this study. Sudijuno's score which is derived in the form of a formula is used in this study to analyze the three components of the suitability of reading materials based on the curriculum in two English textbooks. This study found that from the aspect of relevance in book 1 “When English Rings Bell” published by the Ministry of Education and Culture, it was categorized as “fair” with a percentage of 76%. Meanwhile, book 2 "Interactive English" published by Yudhistira is in the "Fair" category with a percentage of 76%. Furthermore, from the aspect of consistency, book 1 was categorized as "Bad" with a percentage of 16% while in book 2 it is categorized as "Good" with a percentage of 82%. Finally, from the aspect of adequacy in book 1, it was categorized as "enough" with a percentage of 61%, then in book 2 it was categorized as "enough" with a percentage of 61%. It is concluded, in terms of relevance, two English books for grade 7 junior high school were in the "Enough" category with the 2013 curriculum. Furthermore, in terms of consistency, book 2 was more in line with the 2013 curriculum with the "Enough" category. Finally, in terms of the adequacy aspect of the two English textbooks, they are categorized as "fair" with the 2013 curriculum. The final conclusion is that both English textbooks have their respective advantages and disadvantages with the 2013 curriculum.
