Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is one of the factors in mastering English as a foreign language. To facilitate students' vocabulary mastery, teachers should use engaging media when teaching vocabulary. One of the media that teachers can use to teach vocabulary is animation video. This research was conducted to determine the effect of using animation video towards students' vocabulary mastery and to find out whether the students’ vocabulary mastery who are taught by using animation video is better than the students who are taught without animation video. This research used a quantitative approach with a true experimental design by using a pretest-posttest experimental and control group design. The population of this research was all classes of 7th grade students in SMPN 7 Bukittinggi that were taught by the same teacher and consisted of 228 students. To determine the sample, the researcher used the purposive sampling technique. The samples were VII 7 as the experiment class and VII 3 as the control class. The data were derived from the results of the students' vocabulary tests in the pretest and posttest. The result of the research showed that the students' scores on the post-test were higher than the pre-test scores in the experimental class. The mean score of pre­test was 56.97, while the mean score of post-test was 75.00. This means that animation video give contribution on vocabulary mastery. Apart from that, the results of data calculations on the independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test showed that the sig. (2 tailed) was 0.000 lowest than 0.05. In other words, the alternative hypothesis was accepted, which showed that there was a significant effect of using animation video towards students’ vocabulary mastery and there was the difference between the students’ vocabulary mastery who are taught using animation video and students who are not taught using animation video. This means that the used of animation video has an effect on students' vocabulary mastery.
