Abstract

This study aims to determine students' perceptions of worksheets in English language learning of eighth grade students at SMPN 6 Bukittinggi. Preliminary results show a diversity of responses that require further investigation. When asked about their experiences with worksheets, students showed variations in the aspects they selectively paid attention to. Therefore, an investigation of students' perceptions was conducted through three dimensions, namely internal factors, target characteristics, and classroom conditions. Adopting a quantitative descriptive design, this study involved 44 eighth-grade students from SMPN 6 Bukittinggi, who were selected through simple random sampling. Data collection was conducted using a validated Likert scale questionnaire consisting of 24 closed items and analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis techniques. The results of the study indicate that eighth-grade students at SMPN 6 Bukittinggi generally have a very positive perception of worksheets in English language learning, with a percentage of 82.15%. Most students consider worksheets to be helpful in their English language learning. Data analysis shows that the perceiver dimension (internal factor) reached 84.00%. The findings indicate that the most prominent indicator of this dimension is their positive expectations of worksheets, which reached 90.45%. This shows that students expect worksheets to make it easier for them in learning English. The target dimension (worksheet characteristics) reached 80.67%. This indicates that the characteristics of the worksheet, such as relevance, clarity of structure, appearance, and language used, are perceived positively by students. In this dimension, the most prominent indicator is content relevance, which reached 87.27%, which means that students consider the worksheet contents relevant to what they learn in class. However, the visual appearance of the worksheet still needs further development. Meanwhile, the situation dimension (classroom conditions) reached 81.05%, indicating that students perceived the classroom environment positively. Peer discussion was the most influential factor in this dimension, which is included in the social setting indicator. Students' perceptions of worksheets were influenced by internal factors, worksheet characteristics, and learning situations that shaped their positive perceptions.
